What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?
A traditional facelift, often referred to as a "SMAS" (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) facelift, focuses on the superficial layers of the face. In this procedure, the surgeon primarily tightens the SMAS layer, which includes the muscles and the fibrous tissues beneath the skin. The deep plane facelift goes a step further by addressing the deeper structures of the face, repositioning the entire facial musculature and the skin as one unit rather than just tightening the skin and superficial connective tissue. By working beneath the SMAS layer, the deep plane facelift allows for more significant repositioning of the facial tissues, which results in a more natural-looking outcome.
